When would someone take a person to court?

Matthew 5:25 (ESV)

25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.

Typically, people go to court only after other means of resolving a problem have been exhausted. In Jesus’ example, the time for reconciliation is almost at an end, and it must be grasped before it is too late. Again, as with the man giving his offering at the altar, the emphasis is on the urgency of reconciliation. 1 The time for reconciliation is always now and never tomorrow. 2
