What does it mean to be merciful?

Matthew 5:7 (ESV)

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

To be merciful is to treat fellow human beings better than what they deserve, to show compassion and gentleness to those who are miserable and helpless. 1 A life that centres on showing mercy to others exemplifies the conduct that God demands of his people (Psalm 18:25; Proverbs 14:21; Proverbs 17:5). 2
