There are two senses from the context in which God is said to be mocked. The first has to do with providing for his servants (pastors). If a church thinks that they can have solid Bible teaching without any need to reimburse or provide for those teachers, they are effectively despising God’s Word and insulting the Lord. 123 A second sense in which God can be mocked has to do with the lifestyle of the believer. A person cannot claim to accept the gospel and the obligations that come with it and at the same time live in obedience to the flesh instead of the Spirit—God will not be outwitted.
