1. Mark 2:8 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How could the scribes have known that Jesus is truly God?

Mark 2:8 (ESV)

8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts?

Immediately Jesus knows what the scribes are thinking and he questions it. Through this question he demonstrates that he truly is what they preclude from the start: God himself (Mark 2:7). For who else can fathom the spirit of a person than the Spirit of God alone? The scribes ought to know that God (whom they exclude in their thoughts) has caught them red-handed.1
