This verse shows Solomon succeeding David in his own right. We use the phrase in his own right,
since we were told in the previous chapter that Solomon sat on David’s throne as a co-regent with him. However, this verse says more, and speaks of the fact that the kingdom was firmly established
in his control.
The writer did not necessarily wish his readers to believe that this firm establishment took place immediately on the day of David’s death. In fact, the remainder of 1 Kings 2 shows us the way Solomon accomplished this stabilization.
12 So Solomon sat on the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was firmly established.
