What does the sacrifice that they brought show about their social situation?

Luke 2:24 (ESV)

24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

The fact that Mary and Joseph brought a pair of doves rather than a lamb and a dove suggests that they were not a wealthy couple. Jesus was born to be part of a normal family; he was not born into riches.1
