What is the meaning of the name Jesus?

Luke 2:21 (ESV)

21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

Jesus is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name Joshua. It means, God saves. The angel Gabriel told Mary to call her son Jesus (Luke 1:31). He did this in order to emphasize the work that Jesus would do, the work of saving God’s people from their sins (Matthew 1:21).
