1. Song of Solomon 4:9 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How has the woman captivated the man's heart with one glance of her eyes, one jewel of her necklace?

Song of Solomon 4:9 (ESV)

9 You have captivated my heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.

The clause, You have captivated my heart, represents the single Hebrew verb libabtini, a verb formed from the noun heart (leb). The heart represents the inner person in Hebrew culture and language. She has captured the very essence of who the man is. She has aroused his emotions.1 The young woman said something very similar in Song of Solomon 2:5, when she said she was sick with love.2

It does not take much to arouse his passion for her, just a glance of her eye or a single jewel of her necklace.3
