What is a yoke?

Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

A yoke is a wooden beam used on the necks of a pair of oxen or other animals to enable them to pull together on a load. In Jewish tradition, the image of the yoke was often used to describe the law’s role of guiding people in righteousness.
