What does it mean for the Jerusalem above to be our mother?

Galatians 4:26 (ESV)

26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.

The concept of the Jerusalem above being our mother connects with birth and belonging. As a result of the work of the Spirit (John 3:1–8), Christian believers are children of the heavenly Jerusalem, adopted sons of God (Galatians 4:1–7).
