What does Paul mean when he says we are no longer under a guardian (the supervision of the law)?

Galatians 3:25 (ESV)

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,

With this phrase Paul affirms that the old covenant Mosaic law has come to an end. It was binding until the time of the Messiah, but now that the Messiah has come it is no longer required.
