To what altar does the "altar" in our text refer?

Numbers 4:13 (ESV)

13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it.

The altar in our text refers to the bronze altar outside the tabernacle, which was to be used for burnt offerings (Exodus 27:1–8). So this is not a reference to the golden altar (Numbers 4:11).
