Summary of Ecclesiastes 4:16

Ecclesiastes 4:16 (ESV)

16 There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Here we see that no man, no matter how powerful and wise he may be, is able to give humanity the perfect life and the ideal society. We have to look beyond this world.

This situation and chapter of Ecclesiastes is a cry for the Redeemer and his kingdom. It is the cry for Christ who will one day give perfect life for believers on the new earth. It was the Lord Jesus who had to experience during his life on earth how the favour of the people could change suddenly. First he is brought into Jerusalem as King. See, among others, Mark 11:9–10. A few days later the same people were shouting, Crucify him! Crucify him! Mark 15:14.
