What does it mean for Paul to advance in Judaism?

Galatians 1:14 (ESV)

14 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers.

Paul had a greater zeal for the Jewish laws and traditions than many of his compatriots.1 In particular, he was outstripping his fellow students in Jerusalem.2
