What does the Levite’s journeying reveal about him?

Judges 17:8 (ESV)

8 And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn where he could find a place. And as he journeyed, he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah.

The Levite can be seen as different from another sojourner, Abraham. Abraham had also set out for an unknown destination, but went with a keen sense of God’s calling. By contrast, this Levite is shiftless. He has no passion for God, no sense of divine calling, no burden of responsibility. He is a laid-back professional minister following the path of least resistance and waiting for an opportunity to open up.1
