Resisting the devil

1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

The devil is definitely an adversary in the face of whom Christians need to remain on guard. Christ, however, has triumphed so that angels, authorities, and powers have been subjected to him (1 Peter 3:22), and that includes the devil (as a fallen angel). Like a lion, however, the devil would roar to establish his dominance over God’s elect (1 Peter 1:1). Instead of conceding dominance to the devil (and hence running from him or bending before him), Peter tells his readers to resist him, a posture possible only because the Christian knows his Lord Jesus Christ is dominant over the devil.
