What is particular about a “river” in the present setting?

Revelation 22:1 (ESV)

1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb

Every thing John had seen thus far in the holy city was static, that is, walls, gates, jewels, temple, and so on. A river is dynamic, it flows, and so embodies development, growth, life. It is finally in the fourth scene that we see the city alive.
