What is meant by “detestable”?

Revelation 21:27 (ESV)

27 But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

John uses here the same word he had used to describe the content of the prostitute’s cup and the name on her forehead, that is, “abominations” (Revelation 17:4–5). The reference is to the grossness of sin. Clearly, those aligned with the prostitute (and so with “Babylon”) can have no place in the Lord’s New Jerusalem.
