What is a “measuring rod”?

Revelation 21:15 (ESV)

15 And the one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city and its gates and walls.

Builders used a length of reed, with or without interval markings, to measure distances in the building they were constructing. Today’s version of the old-fashioned measuring rod is the retractable tape measure. We do not know how long this angel’s rod was.
