Why is the devil described with the term “your adversary”?

1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

The term translated as “adversary” is a composite of two Greek words meaning “against” and “just.” It’s a legal term describing the person in court who presents the charges against the accused (Proverbs 18:17), and in general life simply means opponent (Luke 18:3). In this case this adversary is “yours” because he is also God’s great enemy.
