Psalm 104:35 (ESV)

35 Let sinners be consumed from the earth, and let the wicked be no more! Bless the LORD, O my soul! Praise the LORD!

Does the shocking beginning of this verse even fit in this hymn of praise for God’s works?

Is this not a dissonant in this melodious song? You would almost think so.

Yet, it does fit, for especially those sinners, those people who do not want to acknowledge God and his commandments, are disruptors in God’s creation. That is not allowed to remain this way for ever. That is why God must act. It is certainly understandable that there will come a time when God can no longer stand this attitude.

By the way, this has happened before, namely in the time of Noah. “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.  And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart” (Genesis 6:5–6). The Creator acted with the water of the flood that washed them away and cleansed the earth (Genesis 7:1–24).

This is how it will be in later times for people who do not obey God. They do not fit on the new earth.

John, exiled on the island of Patmos (see Revelation 1:9) because of his speaking about God and witnessing of his Saviour Jesus, hears it: But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 21:27).

This is a serious warning for us. Let us be serious in the serving and honouring of our Maker. Know that this mighty God is not to be mocked by anyone.

The author of this Psalm knows what he must do. Fully convinced, he praises the Lord.

One more time he praises his Maker from the heart, and he encourages everyone to do so. Say, Hallelujah! Give the Lord praise with all that is in you. Truly, this mighty God is worthy of our praise!
