1. Song of Solomon 2:16 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the young woman say, “My beloved is mine and I am his”?

Song of Solomon 2:16 (ESV)

16 My beloved is mine, and I am his; he grazes among the lilies.

Despite the apprehension she feels in Song of Solomon 2:15 because of the threats to their relationship, the young woman still expresses a reassurance that they have a mutual affection and secure bond between them. This phrase is used again in Song of Solomon 6:3 and Song of Solomon 7:10 and it is one of the phrases that gives the Song its unity. This phrase also reminds the reader of the covenant formula I will be their God, and they will be my people (Jeremiah 7:23; Jeremiah 11:4; Ezekiel 34:30).1
