1. Song of Solomon 1:15 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the young man compare the young woman’s eyes to doves?

Song of Solomon 1:15 (ESV)

15 Behold, you are beautiful, my love; behold, you are beautiful; your eyes are doves.

The young man speaks again, and he declares her beauty once again. He is now focused on her eyes. He is captivated by her eyes, and he calls them doves. It is unclear what the comparison with doves says about her eyes. Is it their colour? Their softness? Their shape? Or their liveliness?1 Whatever the comparison is, it is clearly meant positively in praise of the beauty of her eyes.
