  2. Exposition

Why does she not want to veil herself besides the flocks of his companions?

Song of Solomon 1:7 (ESV)

7 Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock, where you make it lie down at noon; for why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions?

The veil here refers to a prostitute’s veil (see Genesis 38:13–16). If the young man does not give her directions, she will have to wonder from tent to tent among his fellow shepherds and look like a prostitute looking for business.1 This may speak to both her determination to find him because she longs to see him and her concern for her reputation.
