1 Chronicles 4:11–14 (ESV)

11 Chelub, the brother of Shuhah, fathered Mehir, who fathered Eshton.

The name Chelub is sometimes rendered as Kelub. The Septuagint renders the name as Caleb, but none of the information given here would support the identification with Caleb the companion of Joshua.1 Chelub’s parents are not identified. The fact is that nothing is known about Chelub.

The name Ir-Nahash means city of Nahash or city of bronze.2 The name Ge-harashim means the valley of the craftsmen and was located with a cluster of villages including Lod and Ono, some thirty miles northwest of Jerusalem (cf. Nehemiah 11:35). This may explain the inclusion of other craftsmen in the list of names: linen workers (1 Chronicles 4:21) and the potters (1 Chronicles 4:23). The reason for the inclusion of this self-contained unit is the connection with the men of Recah, an as-yet unidentified place. The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) reads Recahab, possibly connecting 1 Chronicles 4:12 with 1 Chronicles 2:55.
