Genesis 11:7 (ESV)

7 Come, let us go down and there confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

The word ‘us’ in this verse again points to the Triune God (as in Genesis 1:26). God now focuses his special attention on those building the tower in Babel. He reveals that he will proceed with a special intervention. He sees to it that mankind, which up to this time had spoken one and the same language, will henceforth speak in different languages instead—this intervention is so radical that from one moment to the next the people will no longer be able to understand one another. Their common language had ensured that mankind could work on the execution of a plan in unity without any difficulty. It ensured that they could live as one people concentrated in one place with no trouble communicating with one another. That is now no longer possible. People no longer understand each other. It becomes virtually impossible to continue working together on a project. They consequently stop building the city of Babel and the tower that was supposed to be erected there.
