1. Judges 16:28 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is positive about Samson’s praying?

Judges 16:28 (ESV)

28 Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.”

For only the second time in the narrative, Samson prays. It is an impassioned plea for help. We welcome the fact that even though his prayer is a last-ditch effort to get God’s help, he does know to whom he must turn when all is lost. Before, he had always assumed that he would be strong, and therefore used his strength to save himself (Judges 14:5–6, Judges 14:19; Judges 15:3–5, Judges 15:13–17; Judges 16:3, Judges 16:8, Judges 16:12, Judges 16:14). Now, for the first time, blind and weak, he simply asks.1 It is a cry of faith, imperfect though that faith is.2
