What makes Samson lay till midnight?

Judges 16:3 (ESV)

3 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts, and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron.

Samson thwarts the plans of the Gazites, though we are not sure what prompted him to lay until midnight and then get up. Maybe he was suspicious, maybe he heard the Gazites. The narrative does not give us the details. We do not learn of the fate of the prostitute. Did Samson bind her so that she could not tip off those who were waiting in ambush? We do not know. He somehow leaves her and goes to the city gates.
