Why did Saul give up his search for David?

1 Samuel 27:4 (ESV)

4 And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.

With David having left the territory of Israel, he was no longer a direct threat to Saul’s legitimacy or rule. Also, it would now be much more costly to chase him. Giving up his search, David’s plan is shown to have succeeded admirably (see 1 Samuel 26:25).1
