Why was David afraid when he heard the words of Achish’s servants?

1 Samuel 21:12 (ESV)

12 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

David was scared for his life.1 His plan to come to Gath had not met the success for which he had hoped. Instead of being welcomed into Achish’s army, he was regarded with suspicion and thus likely to have been killed.
