Why did Jonathan say the LORD had sent David away?

1 Samuel 20:22 (ESV)

22 But if I say to the youth, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond you,’ then go, for the LORD has sent you away.

If Saul desired to have David killed, then the arrows being beyond the youth would be a sign that the Lord had released David from his service obligations in Saul’s court.1
