Why did Saul send for David?

1 Samuel 17:31 (ESV)

31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.

With no other men showing any interest in fighting Goliath, David’s bold claims would have been quickly shared and communicated, also to Saul.1 He would have been very glad to hear that someone was willing to take up his offer and fight against Goliath.2
