1. 1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

For what kind of heart was the LORD looking?

1 Samuel 16:7 (ESV)

7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”

The Lord was seeking a submissive heart.1 He wants a man who will listen to his commandments, a man who will fear and obey him (see Deuteronomy 17:14–20).
