Commentary on Psalm 144:14 (Summary)

Psalm 144:14 (ESV)

14 may our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mishap or failure in bearing; may there be no cry of distress in our streets!

Here follows a further description of the material blessings. These are positive comments about the larger livestock with a reference to three negative terms: no mishap, no failure, no cry. It is difficult to translate what exactly is being said about the cattle here. It could be that they are heavy laden (with a rich harvest, or with a calf); it can also be that they are well-fed. The verse also mentions three things that one does not want to experience: no mishap, no failure, no cries. This description explains the blessings for the rural as well as the urban situation (in our streets). Lastly, the use of our fields and our streets shows the notion of a broad, vast place.
