Who are the pillars of the land?

Isaiah 19:10 (ESV)

10 Those who are the pillars of the land will be crushed, and all who work for pay will be grieved.

While it is possible that these words were used in the same way we used it today (pillars of society), it is more likely a phrase used in a general sense to mean all upon which life in Egypt rests. The words are used to describe the extent of the distress.
