How does the name of the LORD relate to his actions toward Israel?

1 Samuel 12:22 (ESV)

22 For the LORD will not forsake his people, for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself.

The name of the Lord signifies his fame. Since Israel was known as the special people of the Lord, it would reflect badly upon the Lord and his reputation if he were to cast them off.1
