Achan is stoned with his possessions and household, which is an extremely severe punishment, illustrating God’s demands for absolute holiness.1
The death of Achan’s family also ensured that his name was blotted out of Israel. In effect, Achan and his family were given to God in place of the stolen objects that violated the covenant stipulations of herem (holy war).
25 And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The LORD brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
