What made childbirth ceremonially unclean?

Leviticus 12:2 (ESV)

2 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days. As at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean.

Ross suggests, “The flow of blood was a sign of possible death. Any loss of vaginal blood (or seed) meant a diminution of life, and if left unchecked could lead to death. It was therefore incompatible with God, the source of life.”1 In addition to that, it is important to note that the only blood that was permitted to enter the sanctuary was the blood of the sacrificial animal.
