Though we are never given an explicit reason in Scripture, most likely the Lord’s concession to the demands of the elders was meant to create a longing for a godly king in the hearts of his people.1 He gave them a king like that of the nations so that they would realize the foolishness of their ways and wish for a godly king who would have lead them in obedience to God.
