What makes these prophets “treacherous men”?

Zephaniah 3:4 (ESV)

4 Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.

The prophets were men who could not be trusted to lead the people in the word of the Lord. They spoke from their own minds instead of by divine revelation. Therefore, they prove to be treacherous particularly in the way in which they deceive those who come to them seeking divine guidance. However outwardly impressive their words seem, they only promote rebellion and apostasy against God and deceive those who accept what they say as being genuine.1
