A better translation of this verse is: The earth has yielded a rich harvest. May God, our God, bless us.
(e.g., NIV: The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us.
) Given the form of the Hebrew verb, a wish is expressed here. We find exactly the same form in Psalm 67:7. Therefore, the same translation fits both verses. The meaning here is that the harvest is a sign that God brings salvation and leads Israel and the nations on the earth. This further encourages the prayer for God’s blessing to continue (compare praying for a blessing from God on a filled table).
However, it is good to remember that prosperity does not, by definition, coincide with God’s blessing. Especially the Lord Jesus has emphasized that a follower of him can be happy in times of suffering.
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets
(Luke 6:21–23). It is vital, in good fortune and in adversity, to keep one’s gaze on the glory of Christ
(2 Corinthians 4:4 and 2 Corinthians 4:6). Only in him, true happiness can be found. Through Jesus God’s blessing radiates the strongest around us.
