2 Kings 21:24 (ESV)

24 But the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon, and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

The servants who conspired to kill Amon, seemingly did not take into account that the people would be displeased with their murder of the king. It literally says that “the people of the land struck down all those who had conspired against King Amon,” which means that the local population of Judah did this. Subsequently, these same people crowned the young Josiah to become the new king (see 2 Kings 22:1). Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign. This shows that the rural population remained true to the royal house of David.
