1. 1 Peter 4:11 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What is the implication of the instruction, “whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God”?

1 Peter 4:11 (ESV)

11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

It is not that difficult to open one's mouth to utter words intended to benefit the hearer. But words arising from the human heart are not automatically helpful; on the contrary, see Romans 3:13–14. Far more helpful are words in step with God’s own truth. That is particularly so for persons who have lost family, friends, and perhaps a job on account of conversion to Christ. The assumption is that the speaker ensures his efforts to comfort have been properly informed by Scripture (Acts 7:38).
