What does it mean to be brought to the “far reaches of the pit”?

Isaiah 14:15 (ESV)

15 But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit.

This verse, directly addressed to the enemy king, paints the contrast between what Babylon wanted and its destined end. The king is brought to the lowest part of the pit—as far removed from heaven as possible.
