Why was Eli seated on a seat beside the doorpost of the temple?

1 Samuel 1:9 (ESV)

9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD.

Being seated on a chair meant that Eli had a place of honour in a society where most people sat on the ground.1 Presumably he was seated beside the doorpost so that he could supervise activities in the vicinity of the temple.
