Why did Saul put people in prison?

Acts 8:3 (ESV)

3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison.

The early church met together in houses for worship and fellowship. Imprisonment was most likely in preparation for some form of interrogation followed by a possible sentencing. It is possible that flogging or even death could be a juridical outcome.1
