In what way did the Samaritans receive the Spirit?

Acts 8:17 (ESV)

17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

Most likely the Spirit came in a manner similar to his coming at Pentecost. That is, there was some kind of visual and audible phenomena to confirm his presence and blessing upon God’s people.1
