What is the sin that needs to be forgiven?

Acts 7:60 (ESV)

60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Stephen is following Jesus’ command to pray for those who abuse you (Luke 6:27–28), seen also in his example on the cross (Luke 23:34). The sin that needs to be forgiven is the killing of a witness who has spoken the truth.1
