What does Stephen mean with his cry to Jesus?

Acts 7:59 (ESV)

59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

The cry of Stephen is similar to that of Jesus (cf. Luke 23:46). It is an echo of Psalm 31:5—the prayer of a believer who has confidence that God will preserve his life. Coming from the lips of Stephen, it is thus a confidence that his life will now continue in the presence of Jesus.1
