Who were the twelve?

Acts 6:2 (ESV)

2 And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.

The Twelve refers to the eleven apostles (Acts 1:13) and Matthias (Acts 1:26). This is the only time in Acts that the apostles are referred to as the Twelve.1
